From Heroes to Supernatural: A Fanfic Journey

I have to say... writing this post is bringing back a lot of memories. Some good, some bad. But at least the good outweighs the bad, right?

I guess I should start at the beginning.

I was OBSESSED with the NBC show Heroes when I was in eighth and ninth grade. And when I say obsessed, I mean drawing the show's symbol in my notebooks and on my bedpost in my dorm room (I went to an all-girls boarding school) or writing Milo Ventimiglia's character's name on every surface I owned (Mrs. Peter Petrelli). I mean, COME. ON. LOOK AT THAT SMILE!

I was in my creative writing class, trying to think of something... creative to write. Then along came the fanfic. It was a self-insert where I wrote myself as a beautiful slender woman named Erica (at that time I loved the name so damn much) and I had incredible superpowers. And, I was the love interest of Peter Petrelli, the character who could absorb superpowers from anyone close by like a sponge.

I banged out the whole thing in the span of a month and it came out to be 75 pages. The whole process made me fall in love with writing.

I tried writing more, even did movie blending but it was so horrible, I try not to think about it. Looking back on it now, I realized it was because I didn't know what else to write. Until today.

It was my junior year when I discovered Supernatural. I watched it because I had a huge crush on Jeffrey Dean Morgan (played Denny Duquette in Grey's Anatomy). Well, in Supernatural, he played the harsh and neglectful father of the two monster hunting brothers, Sam and Dean Winchester. His character, John, was the one who got them into it in the first place after their mother died a horrific inexplicable death. And Sam and Dean, they haven't been the same since...

Basically my crush on JDM shifted after seeing how much of an a-hole the father was and turned to Dean Winchester, played by Jensen Ackles. I don't know if my readers are also Gilmore Girl fans (I am!!!) but Jared Padalecki who plays Sam, plays a character named Dean in the show.

Okay, before I go off on a further tangent. Let me just explain the rest.

I turned to Supernatural when things got tough for me. Because the Winchester brothers' problems made more sense than what was going on in the real world and it was all easily solvable. Plus, as a young doe-eyed aspiring writer, I fell in love with the story structure. It made me wish I could write something like that, where the seasons' storylines flowed together with such fluidity.

And now with the show ending this fall with its fifteenth season, this fan fiction I'm currently writing is my tribute to the show. To thank them for their company, for keeping my sanity together when I couldn't as a teen. For their blooper reels which had my doubled over, tears streaming down my face from laughing so hard. And for this scene, my favorite scene of all.

Brief context for newcomers: Dean is infected by a ghost virus that makes him scared of everything.

While I am sad to see the show go, I'm happy they're finally ending it because... how many storylines can you make???? It's gotten to the point where too much is happening at once.

Anyway, The Wayward Daughter is my tribute to the show. And it is a self-insert fanfic lol. A gorgeous girl with flowing dark hair and stunning eyes. The works.

Now that I just went overboard talking about this show, do you want to watch it if you haven't seen it? It's a great bingeable show!

First chapter of The Wayward Daughter is going live on Friday at noon! I'll send an email out to everyone once it's up!
